The rule of thirds is considered by many to be one of the most important first techniques you can learn to create better compositions and to help you progress from “taking pictures” to “making pictures”.
According to Bryan (2003), the rule of thirds is the "rule of thumb" for composing visual images. He argued that any image should be visualized as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. Important constituent elements must be placed along these lines or their intersections. Many people believe that the brain will perceive faster when objects are above this point, thereby attracting the viewer's curiosity.

In the portrait below, the subject is also placed according to the Rule of Third, creating a sense of visual balance for the photo.
